( 1917- )
Has lived in Sir Lanka since 1956. His story "Rendezvous with Rama" won the Hugo, Nebula, and the John W. Campbell Award. His short story "The Star" won a Hugo.
Awarded the Nebula Grand Master Award in 1968
He has also won many other awards in the writing and scientific communities.
His scientific writings are many, and include "The Exploration of Space" which won an International Fantasy Award for nonfiction in 1952.
He invented the communications satellite. Still another of his inventions is described in the story "Silence, Please!"--Winter 1950 issue of the British publication: Science Fantasy Magazine. It has only recently been able to be realized due to advancements in data processing. The realized invention has been on several TV science 'magazine' shows. I have noticed that no one has noted the ties to science fiction. Perhaps, because they don't know of the invention's relation to Arthur C. Clarke.
One has to wonder how much we owe to the dreams of sci-fi authors. Just how Mr.
Clarke's invention in "Silence, Please!" might evolve is presented in an online tale of the near future called, "Lev.UP". Thanks for visiting the SciFiArchive!
